215 freeway closure chemical leak A chemical spill forced the evacuation of more than 100 homes in Perris on Friday morning and forced the closure of the 215 Freeway in both directions. The problem could last for several more days, officials said.
According to the Riverside County Fire Department, the hazmat incident began at about 19:40 on Thursday following reports of a chemical leak from a wagon near Harvill and Oleander streets.
Authorities determined that the chemical was styrene, which overheats and in this case can become volatile. Officials said the chemical was supposed to be stored at 85 degrees, but it was last measured at over 300 degrees.
At a news conference Friday morning, Chief John Crater of CAL Fire Riverside County said he was talking to experts around the country about the possible effects of the spill.
