Ryan Giggs was an idol on the pitch but his ex-girlfriend was an abusive "gaslighter" in his private life, a court has found.
Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court heard there was a "much uglier and sinister side to his character" behind the public role of the former Manchester United and Wales international player, who is accused of headbutting Gigg's ex-girlfriend.
The jury was told the 48-year-old's private life involved a "litany of physical and psychological abuse by a woman he allegedly loved."
August Dec November 2017 Giggs denies engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour towards his ex-girlfriend, PR executive Kate Greville, between 2020 and 2017.
He has also pleaded not guilty to assaulting the 36-year-old at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on November 1, 2020, by actually assaulting him and assaulting his younger sister Emma Greville.

"He was still living with Stacey the whole time," Kate Greville told the court.
Kate claims Giggs told her he had broken up with Stacey, saying: "He'd say one thing to me and then I'd hear another.
"Everything turned out in May 2016. Was awful. Letters and emails from the media follow me.
"His ex-wife and daughter sent me bad news.
"I wanted to protect him, that's why I said nothing happened.
"Then I found out that he had been living with Stacey all this time."
"I was madly in love with Ryan," says Kate Greville.
The ex-girlfriend of Ryan Giggs has told a court how she "fell in love" with the former Man U star.
She said: "He used to say I was his soul mate. We would talk for hours.
"He helped me get out of this situation."
There were "red flags" when he ignored Giggs and Giggs claimed he was "someone else."
"I was basically madly in love with him," she added.
